We’ve updated this TP-Link Archer C50 review in 2021. It’s still a best selling router because it’s affordable, easy to set-up and provides stable connections.
I have never had any WiFi problems since I installed it! Indeed! As a result of the excellent reviews and the affordable pricing, I was not sure exactly what I would be getting when I bought this. Let me tell you the back-story.
My BT Infinity Broadband is not compatible with the existing router I have. After being let down by BT Homehub 3 wireless router that kept dropping connection, I went searching on Amazon for an ADSL2+ router, and this TP-LINK Archer C50 V3 AC1200 Dual Band Wi-Fi Cable Router turned up. My decision to purchase it was influenced by the ease of setup. The configuration process was remarkably simple for me. It took me less than 10 minutes to complete the how-to process and I was online immediately.
Now, let’s have a quick look at the major pros and cons of this amazing router:
TP-Link Archer C50: Quick Configuration
After the router was connected to my computer’s Ethernet port, I followed the wizard on-screen and configured the router. The TP-Link Archer C50 Router’s WAN port was connected to the BT infinity red ethernet cable. Follow the remaining instructions on the screen and within 10 minutes I was up and running.
I am so pleased with the Dual Band range, and all of my devices are connected seamlessly without a problem. An added bonus is the 5-GHz signal combined with 2.4-GHz. There is a noticeable speed increase in web page loading and video playback.
Other users have had similar experiences:
The device I needed would be a WIFI router that would allow me to remotely control a Presonus Studiolive III digital mixing console from a tablet using a cost-effective WiFi router.
My musical director and I were able to access the mixes set up on the console using two tablets (iPads). During the performance, the MD could adjust the local monitor mix during a soundcheck (so I would not have to keep running back to the console).
My stable, secure, private wireless network works instantly on my smartphone and I can use it while traveling.
The vast majority of people that are looking for a wireless router will be seeking anything that will replace their built-in router that is included with their internet or DSL modem. Even though low-cost routers such as the TP-Link Archer C50 may do the necessary tasks, people get confused if it’s really worth it or not. TP-Link Archer C50 reviewers found that it may not be worth the price if you need internet access for a very large group of people at the same time.
This router from TP-link was released in 2014, the Archer C50 (C50). In reality, it is powered by a MediaTek MT7620A @580 MHz chipset, with 64 MB of RAM, and 8 MB of flash memory. Archer C50 is able to offer utmost speeds between 300 + 867 Mbps, which is typical of AC1200 routers working with IEEE 802.11b/g/n/ac standards.
This new feature of the C50 router, called the Guest network, really makes it useful for creating another network for guests. There are 1 x USB 2.0 port(s) on this machine. A 10/100 Mbps WAN port is on the Archer C50 router, and four 10/100 Mbps LAN ports are available.
TP-Link C50’s Design Reviewed:
It feels a little fragile in the hand due to the Archer C50’s size and lightweight plastic construction. Nevertheless, since its price is so low, don’t expect a heavy-duty body. There’s no denying the router’s sleek appearance; it is completely black, with glossy finishes across its body that feature a pattern and a glossy finish. Its green LEDs on the front make it most noticeable due to its modest size.
Despite that, it looks respectable, so you can leave it out without feeling like you’re hiding it. In a router like this, you wouldn’t want anything to hamper its performance. The TP-Link Archer C50 is a great choice for anyone looking for a cheap router.
If you don’t know any better, the web administration portal for TP-Link Archer C50 is a desert of information. With the router’s limited functions, there’s also no need for the accompanying website to be crowded with flashy graphics. When you log in the first time, you will have the option of viewing the network map and selecting the various settings. The Advanced tab allows users to change advanced settings, however, most users will not make use of them.
Main Features at a Glance:
- This version supports Wi-Fi 802.11ac technology.
- The total available bandwidth is 1.2 Gbps, with simultaneous connections at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
- Stable WiFi connections are provided by dual-band, external antennas.
- USB ports allow local printing and document sharing, as well as accessing documents remotely via FTP servers.
- With the TP-LINK Tether, you can easily manage your network.
TP Link C50’s Performance Test:
We were not able to get the advertised speeds from the TP-Link Archer C50 while testing it. Our previous testing showed that the router could handle a 250Mbps connection, but it wasn’t able to reach more than 85Mbps when connected by wire. A strong wireless signal kept us from getting more than 65Mbps in our tests. The early testing of Xfinity’s service led to the erroneous conclusion that the company was experiencing technical problems, but further testing throughout the day consistently detected the same issue.
Things start to break down further when many devices are using bandwidth simultaneously. During a music stream from our Apple HomePod, our internet connection dropped to 47Mbps. It cooled off even more during our YouTube viewing. We were still unable to achieve even a fraction of the stated internet download rates even with only one device connected.
How did we test it?
In the testing inside home, we put the router on the center floor of a three-story building that’s around 2,000 square feet in size. From the moment we took the router out of the box, we knew it was going to suffer from insufficient signal strength and range. The mistake we made was entirely our own.
- The download speed and upload speed could be maintained across the entire house.
- The tests were conducted in the basement and upstairs bathroom, and we observed no slowdowns, aside from the sluggish signal.
- The Archer C50 has a generous shooting range, and we were pleased with it.
- This router is probably not worth the investment if your internet connection speed exceeds 50 Mbps.
- People with DSL, particularly those without integrated routers, should purchase this router.
- Depending on how many devices you have accessing the Internet simultaneously, this router may provide a good range.
Should you go for it?
A router in this price category is not likely to deliver top-of-the-line performance, but in our TP-Link Archer C50 review, we have explained how we tested its performance and it seriously amazed us considering it’s an affordable router.
A router’s extended range makes it a worthwhile purchase for those who do not have broadband and do not mind its limitations. It isn’t designed to perform well on multiple devices; expect to have some difficulties if you have more than 10 devices to be connected at once.
A few TP-Link routers are reliable, including the Archer C50. While I used the older TP-Link router with this one, I did not observe any difference in performance on 2.4 GHz; however, the real difference appeared on 5 GHz. With my newer devices, 5GHz band connectivity has been seamless and internet speeds have been good.
TP-Link products are standard: affordable, reliable, and with reasonable third-party support. According to TP-Link, they manage their own supply chain, which lets them improve reliability and hold down costs at the same time. Similar results are usually achieved by companies working in that way.
For small homes or apartments with fewer appliances than two bedrooms, TP Link’s Archer A7 router still provides a good network for an affordable price. The speed drops noticeably over long distances and on very busy networks.
Between these two brands, there are very few differences. When it comes to high-end routers or extenders, Netgear tends to be a better choice. If you’re searching for the lowest price, TP-Link is the best choice.
